Ministry of Science and ICT of Korea recently updated the “Technical standards for radio equipment for radio stations that can be established without reporting” with new requirements for UWB technology capable of low-power and ultra-precise sensing to be applied in portable devices such as smartphones for various services.

Wireless devices of wireless facilities for mobile communication and devices communicating with them shall satisfy the following conditions:

- Allowed frequency band: 6 GHz-8.8 GHz

- Do not emit radio waves unless requested by the user

- Automatically stop radio wave emission within 10 seconds if there is no transmission/reception after communication starts

- Wireless devices of wireless facilities for mobile communication shall have a function to stop radio wave emission in aircrafts and ships.

- The device that communicates with a wireless device of wireless facility for mobile communication shall not emit radio waves unless there is a request for transmission.

-“Do not use on aircrafts or ships” must be indicated in user manuals, etc.

Other UWB applications are still allowed in 4.2-4.8GHz and 6-10.2GHz.
